Science fiction entertainment changed forever in the 1960’s when two shows made their debut on television. Doctor Who hit the U.K. airwaves in 1963, and Star Trek premiered on U.S. television in 1966, and the rest is geek history. The two iconic franchises are teaming up at San Diego Comic-Con this year in honor of the first “Intergalactic Friendship Day” with a special panel and and off-site pop up experience.

Alex Kurtzman, showrunner and executive producer of the Star Trek franchise, and Russell T Davies, showrunner and executive producer behind the Doctor Who Whoniverse are scheduled to appear in special “Friendship is Universal” panel at the San Diego Convention Center ahead on Saturday, July 27 from 5:30pm - 6:30pm in Room 6A ahead of International Friendship Day on July 20. The aim is for the chat to bring together fans of either (or both) franchises and foster a greater sense of community between them. Fans who attend will receive a special Doctor Who x Star Trek poster designed by artist, Dusty Abell.
It seems unlikely that Kurtzman and Davies will announce a live-action crossover between Doctor Who and Star Trek, but that doesn’t mean it’s out of the realm of possibility. In 2012, IDW Comics published a crossover miniseries between The Next Generation and the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) era of Doctor Who. This series also featured a flashback in which the classic TOS crew met the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker).
The two franchises will also be teaming up for a “Friendship is Universal” celebratory gallery experience at 226 and 230 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp, which will feature original costumes and props from both franchises. There will also be photo ops and friendship bracelet giveaways. Stop by Thursday-Saturday from 11am-8pm, and Sunday from 11am-5pm. Badges are not required and the event is free!
