David Lynch's DUNE Returning to Theaters for 40th Anniversary Screenings

It’s been 40 years since David Lynch’s Dune premiered in theaters. The film was one of the most expensive films ever made at the time. After it opened to negative reviews and mediocre box-office receipts the director disavowed his big screen take on Frank Herbert’s 1965 book. Over the years, the epic space opera has become a cult favorite, and Fathom Events is teaming up with Universal Pictures to bring it back to the big screen for two days only.
The 40th anniversary screenings are scheduled on February 18th and 19th in select theaters nationwide. That’s two weeks ahead of the release of Denis Villeneuve’s highly-anticipated Dune: Part Two which is scheduled to premiere on March 1st.

1984’s Dune featured a cast of established and up-and-coming actors who went on to become household names, including Kyle MacLachlan, Patrick Stewart, Sean Young, Virginia Madsen, Max von Sydow, and Dean Stockwell. It also featured Sting as one of the film’s primary villains. as well as an incredible soundtrack by Brian Eno and Toto.
As part of the special screenings Fathom Events will also be showing a behind-the-scenes clip breaking down the creation of Dune’s models, described by a press release as “model unit supervisor Brian Smithies explains the unique challenges of bringing the models to life on Dune, from the uncomfortable weather conditions to the crude motion control ships.”
