Kermit The Frog's "The Rainbow Connection" Inducted Into The National Recording Registry
It’s not easy being green, but being among the 25 new inductees into the 2020 National Recording Registry might make it a little easier. Kermit the Frog’s, “Rainbow Connection” is now in the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry.
The song made it’s debut as the opening of 1979’s The Muppet Movie and became an instant classic. Written by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher, the song was performed by Jim Henson (as Kermit) in the film and was nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Original Song”. It continues to inspire generations of Muppets fans to this day. You can check it out on the video below!
Other notable inductees joining “Rainbow Connection” in the Registry are Janet’s Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation 1814,” Louis Armstrong’s “When the Saints Go Marching In,” Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” Nas’ “Illmatic,” and Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration.”
President Franklin Roosevelt’s lighting of the White House Community Christmas Tree with Winston Churchill, just weeks after the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor, also made it in. As did broadcaster Phil Rizzuto’s 1961 “Holy cow!” call of Roger Maris record-breaking 61 home run.
Kermit sat down with Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden to discuss the honor and said, “Well, gee, it’s an amazing feeling to officially become part of our nation’s history.”
Keep going to watch Kermit’s complete interview with Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden in the video below:
