Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock the last few days you’ve probably already heard about the news Warner Bros. will stream all its 2021 releases on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters. The annoucement affects a diverse array of films, including some of 2021’s most high proflle ones like Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, The Suicide Squad, and The Matrix 4. Each title will get a one-month access period on the streaming platform — while it is also in theaters — before continuing its theatrical run in the U.S. Then, the films will follow customary distribution windows.
According to the official announcement, this hybrid model is directly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and is intended to be a one-time occurrence. Even so, it’s an unprecedented move, and. move that will arguably impact the future of movie theaters as they try to reopen next year.
Not everyone is excited about Warner Bros. annoucement. Legendary Entertainment is set to challenge Warner Bros.’ decision to release Dune and Godzilla Vs. Kong on HBO Max. Director, Christopher Nolan is also voicing his criticism of the plan, reportedly calling HBO Max, “the worst streaming service.”
The future of movie theaters will remain a hotly debated topic in the months ahead, but in the meantime film fans might as well get excited about all the films they can stream in the comfort of their own homes. Here’s a full list all 17 Warner Bros. films coming to HBO Max in 2021.
