Style Crush: Gal Gadot's Leggy White "Goddess Gown" From WONDER WOMAN 1984
Wonder Woman 1984 is finally in theaters and available to stream on HBO Max, and if you’re a fan of 80’s fashion you’re going to appreciate all the little nods to the “decade of excess” designer Lindy Hemming incorporporates into the film’s costumes. Watching Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) give us a history lesson in bad 80’s fashion trends while trying on a series of outfis, or seeing Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) rock thigh high boots in fake fur is a lot of fun. But for me, there’s one look that stands out above all others — the white dress. You know the one I’m talking about.
Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) wears the ivory silk dress to a party before reuniting with Steve Trevor. There’s a moment as she steps out of the car where the breeze catches the skirt just right, revealing miles of legs as Diana casually walks into the party. Talk about making an entrance! Designer, Lindy Hemming refers to the beautifully tailored look as “the goddess garment”, and rightfully so. It’s simple, elegant, and absolutely stunning!

Gadot talked about the influences that went into making the look of Wonder Woman 1984 authentic in a Town Hall interview with Jess Cagle for SiriusXM earlier this month, explaining that she and director Patty Jenkins had a distinct idea of how they wanted Diana to look before breaking down the inspiration for the white dress. "The white dress was a dress that Lindy had found a reference from a Dior fashion show back in 84. So, we literally just like, we, we completely mimicked the dress and made some alteration," Gadot said. "The thing with Diana is that she really, like you said, she needs to look timeless and chic, but at the same time, she doesn't, she can't look like she's dealing too much and she cares too, too much for the clothing, but she just has her own style.”
The Academy Award-winning Hemming knows a little something about creating iconic on screen looks. Her credits also include Casino Royale, The Dark Knight, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and more. The designer also spoke about the dress recently in an interview with Golden Globes.com saying:
We knew that scene needed something special. I wanted her to stand out like a shaft of light. We explored so many evening dresses – none of the metallic ones of the period seemed to be the right for her character. They seemed to be too on the nose. I referenced Chanel, Calvin Klein and Claude Montana to create that kind of classic American look. I created that costume as a shirt and wrap-around skirt with a really clever cutter, Ian Frazer Wallace, in a really heavy double silk crepe. We wanted something so that her legs could come through. She has the most fantastic legs anyway, and I knew that she would walk along that Long Pond in Washington (the National Mall). It seemed like white would make you stand apart from everybody else. She would look like a goddess, and she is a goddess in a way, we called it the 1980s goddess look. Cuff from Tiffany.
So now you know. The look is actually a top and a skirt, inspired by some iconic houses, and I would be happy to find a spot for either piece in my own closet! Gadot finishes the look with taupe heels, a dark lip, and a Tiffany cuff.
