“Sustainability” is a word we keep hearing more and more in the fashion world — and more brands are looking for ways to recycle textiles responsibly. Levi’s is encouraging customers to start rethinking their shopping habits wih a new denim buy-back program that lets shoppers sell their old jeans for a gift card towards a future purchase.

The program is called Levi’s SecondHand, and it allows customers to trade in old pieces in exchange for a gift card equivalent to a portion of each item’s perceived value. Clothes received are cleaned and then go up for sale on the company’s website, where others can directly purchase them. If your Levi’s denim is too worn out, you’ll still receive $5 toward a future purchase. 

“Repurposing and repairing clothes requires minimal additional energy input, no water, and no dyes to make more jeans,” said Jennifer Sey, Levi’s chief marketing officer. “Buying a used pair of Levi’s through SecondHand saves approximately 80% of the CO2 emissions and 700 grams of waste compared to buying a new pair of Levi’s.”

All of the pre-loved items will be priced affordably, ranging in price from approximately $20 - $150 USD. Alongside its secondhand program, Levi’s is also launching a range of accessories and clothing made entirely from upcycled denim. Constructed from the brand’s back catalogue of faulty or returned products, the “Levi’s By Levi’s” collection spans tote bags to tie-dye jackets to embroidered jeans. The sustainable capsule is available exclusively at Levi’s Haus London, a new concept store offering in-house tailors that will repair and rework customers’ old Levi’s items.
