"The Shawshank Redemption" Returns To Theaters For 25th Anniversary Screenings

It’s hard to believe now, but The Shawshank Redemption wasn’t a big box-office hit when it premiered back in 1994. The movie barely cracked the top 10 at the box office the week it was released — not exactly an impressive debut for a movie that went on to garner seven Academy Award Nominations including Best Picture.

Since then it’s gone on to become and one of the most well-loved movies in film history, and in 2015 the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. But most fans haven’t had the chance to see it on the big screen —until now.

Fathom Events is bringing The Shawshank Redemption back to theaters nationwide to celebrate it’s 25th anniversary September 22, 24, and 25th as part of the annual TCM Big Screen Classics series. In addition to the film moviegoers will get a chance to hear commentary from TCM Primetime host, Ben Mankiewicz before and after the movie.

If you haven't seen it, the film stars Tim Robbins as inmate Andy Dufresne, an innocent man who is sentenced to life in prison after being convicted for the murders of his wife and her lover. After being sent to Shawshank State Penitentiary, he strikes up a friendship with Red (Morgan Freeman), and over the course of nearly 20 years he experiences the ups and downs of prison life, adapts, and eventually plans an elaborate escape.

Tickets for The Shawshank Redemption are on-sale now at FathomEvents.com and participating theater box offices. To see if you can catch a screening in your area head to the Fathom Events website now.
