Friday Five: Clever Holiday Cards To Help Spread Some Cheer
The countdown to the holidays is on and with that comes the annual holiday card ritual. In case you’ve always wondered where that tradition came from, it started in the U.K. in the 1840’s when a postal worker thought of the idea to help promote the then new mail service. I will always love snail mail, and I still send Christmas cards each year, so I’m always on the lookout for cool cards and paper shops — and if they’re cards that bring a little geeky flair or humor into the mix that’s even better.
These days, there are plenty of places out there to find geeky holiday cards, but In this week’s Friday Five I’ve rounded up some of my go-to shops. These cards are sure to put a smile on the face of whoever receives them. Take a look!
1. Keanu Reeves Christmas Card ($5, CastleMcQuade)
I stumbled on Brooklyn-based artist PJ McQuade several years ago, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. No matter what your fandom is, chances are you can find a card on his Castle McQuade Etsy shop. Jurassic Park. Gremlins. Star Wars. Jaws. Game of Thrones. Star Trek. Twin Peaks. And I could go on and on. The Keanu Reeves Christmas Card is one of this year’s additions to the shop and I love it! You can also find ornaments, magnets, and other seasonal cards in the shop.
2. Christmas It Is ($6, Steel Petal Press)
My dad had a printing shop back in the day, and I’m still a sucker for a good letterpress card. Steel Petal Press has some beautiful cards for all occasions, but this Yoda Christmas Card has been a personal favorite the last few seasons. .
3. Alien Christmas Card ($2.38+, LCHMorgan)
If a Xenomorph trimming a tree doesn’t get you in a festive mood I don’t know what will. I love all the details in this Alien Christmas Card from Lowri Morgan. She carries this, along with a wide range of sci-fi and fantasy greeting cards on her Etsy Shop LCHMorgan.
4. Golden Girls Christmas Card ($5.99, Punderella)
For those of you who like a good (or bad) pun, Etsy Shop Pundarella is the place for you. Owner, Erica Wilkes stocks the shop with punderful pop-culture cards and gifts, including this Golden Girls Christmas Card..
5. Holiday Xanax ($5.95, Richie Design)
Have I mentioned I’m a sucker for good letterpress printing? I met Richele Silva several years ago through a mutual friend when I asked him where he got his correspondence cards. He put me in touch with Richie, and I’ve been obsessed with her work ever since. You can find a wide range of clever gifts, invitations, and cards in her Etsy shop RichieDesign, including this Holiday Xanax card which pretty much sums up my mood as the holidays are just around the corner and I’m SO not ready!
